I won’t be updating this site any longer since I bought a domain and moved everything to Impybat’s Emporium. Same unrelated weirdness in the bizarro filing cabinet! And no ads, yay!
Thank you Pinterest, for being the best place to pillage pictures, recipes, and journal prompts. So, here we are again at September. We’re starting the long, slow good bye to summer, and blah blah blah, you’ve heard this all before.
I always mean to do one of these monthly prompts lists but I either forget or we’re halfway through the month. Actually, I did do a 30 Day Challenge once before…and completed it!
Instead of backtracking (unless I change my mind and squeeze the other 4 in), I’m just going to start at day 5: This week’s success.
Well, it’s only Monday, and Labor Day at that. I haven’t had time for success yet. Do last week’s successes count? I could be here all day debating this. But since you want real answers: this week’s success includes completing the Possessives 2 lesson in level 10 on Duolingo. It’s a free language-learning platform. I’m teaching myself French.
More recent successes:
- going to Title Boxing Club or exercising at least three days a week consistently.
- Finishing my novel and sending it off to be copy edited.
- Completing daily 15 minute freewrites for eleven days in a row.
- Writing the new novel daily, also in 15 minute increments, without self-censoring or constant, as-I-go edits.
I swear this meme looks familiar…*goes to check* ok, I’ve answered some of these already on previous memes, but here goes.
What’s the meaning or inspiration of your blog’s title?
The name Impybat is actually an old mIRC chat nick when I used to hang out on #weird-al. It comes from both my love of bats and the comic strip Mutts, when Mooch and Earl met a bat in a haunted house.
Says the bat: I’m not creepy, nor am I am mouse with wings. My ears are adorable, and I’m very helpful to the environment. Check out this nasty bug I’m about to eat. You’re welcome.
I’ve always liked the word emporium. Since an emporium is a place where you can get a wide variety of stuff, and that pretty much describes my blog, I thought it was fitting when it came time for a blog name change.
What do you consider your biggest strength?
Social skills. It sounds weird and silly, but what cripples others with social anxiety gives me energy.
What do you consider your biggest weakness?
Tell us why we should like your favorite band.
It used to be the Pixies. I don’t think I have a favorite anymore, just bands I’m currently obsessed with. Right now, that’s Gunship, Metric, and CHVRCHES. Why you should like them: because they’re AWESOME. Just kidding, you may or may not like them but I encourage you to always try new things, including music.
Who is your favorite model of all-time? Why?
I don’t know too much about the modeling world. But if I had to name one:
it’d be this guy: David Gandy. Why? Look at him! Oh, and he loves dogs.
Does it bother you when people talk about their pets? Why?
No, because I’m one of those “fur baby” people.
Tell us about your favorite holiday.
Halloween! Well, let’s see: it falls on October 31, and it’s a joyously spooky time of year where people of all ages get dressed up in costumes and attend parties and go trick or treating and–
Oh, you knew all that already? Fine.
What was the last fabulous meal that you ate? Where were you?
The last fabulous meal I ate was about a half hour ago. I was enjoying last night’s leftover Chinese take out. Pan fried noodles and teriyaki chicken, yum.
What’s your lucky number and why?
I don’t really have a lucky number, but as a numerology fan, I’ll just approach this question from that angle. Here’s a post I did once about being a Life Path 5.
Art journal page describing Life Path 5 through keywords and images. A Life Path number is a concept of Numerology, something I’ve been fascinated with since childhood. There are a number of ways to calculate the various numbers, such as through your name or date of birth.
Of course, there must be negative traits that exist alongside the positive ones. I made a little “doorway” flap that lifts up and wrote some of them underneath.
I used cardstock, acrylics, markers, gel pen, stickers, a rubber stamp, and inkjet printed images.
What are five things you hate?
Misogyny, homophobia, willful ignorance, the cult of celebrity worship, and math.
What are five things you love?
My husband, the way my cat Evangeline jumps up and headbutts me in the morning, autumn, creating art, and writing.
Tell us a secret you can because other than us, who’ll read this anyway?
I love chemical smells like gasoline, rubber tires, paint, and also musty basement smells.
What is the favorite body feature of yourself?
Is there a tattoo that you want? If you don’t have one, gun-to-your-head so you have to get one, what would it be?
I already have two, a purple bat and blue stars. I have a list of future tattoos, which include a magpie, a cat patronus, and something that incorporates Gemini/Mercury. Actually I’d love to have one with my whole natal chart.
What do you love about yourself?
I love that I am outgoing and find it easy to talk to people.
What do you hate about yourself?
I’m extremely impatient.
Who is someone you miss?
My nephew, but he and his girlfriend are supposed to be coming to visit this winter.
It’s another meme from Sunday Stealing!
23. Have you ever gone to the “dark side”?
Depends on what you mean by the dark side. Do they mean murdered someone? Used hard drugs? Or dressed like Darth Vader for Halloween? But since you ask, I *did* just color my hair black cherry, and I dress in either black or gray almost every day.
24. What shirt are you wearing right now?
It’s purple and gray striped. I wish I could say it was more exciting, like my Sharknado shirt (In case of Sharknado, please break glass), or my Derek and Stiles School for Teens Who Can’t Werewolf So Good shirt. I have a lot of really weird tee shirts.
25. What’s important about a bed to you? Like type of sheets, size or whatever.
I prefer a Queen or King (or California King, if you’re asking!) and I like the sheets to be soft. Who wouldn’t, though? Show me a person who says they’d prefer to sleep on a futon with scratchy sheets. That’s because they don’t exist.
26. Can you sing?
27. What is something about you that would surprise us?
If I keep writing about the things about me that would surprise you, there won’t be anything left to tell! OK fine. I’m writing another book called The Gospel According to Astley.
28. Have you been a pirate, Renaissance Fair, or other costumed event? If not, would you for the right event or say cause?
OMG yes. We used to go to King Richard’s Faire down in Carver , MA every year for like ten years. I usually dressed in some variation of a kender, from DragonLance but I went as a faun one year and as a generic wench a few times. I haven’t gone in a long time. Kinda wishing right now I still had pics, but TBH, they were really awful pics.
29. What songs do you sing in the shower?
30. Favorite girl’s name?
31. Favorite boy’s name?
32. What’s in your pocket or purse right now?
- A coin purse with a cartoon of a squirrel playing guitar that says Makin’ Change, which holds my license, ATM card, and some cash
- a pair of sunglasses
- a packet of wet wipes
- a lint roller
- feminine hygiene products
- a packet of Kleenex
33. Last thing that made you laugh?
My dog sleep-howling. If I do it along with him, he does it louder. I have to get a recording of it.
34. Best toy as a child?
My art supplies. My grandmother used to gift me with a box full of new stuff every year.
35. Worst injury you have ever had?
So far? I fell at work and turned my ankle. I was carrying some plates clearing a table and tripped on a slightly raised lip of tile, stumbled and landed right on it. I heard it POP. Nobody saw it happen because everyone was out back. It swelled to great proportions. I never got it checked.
36. Where would you love to live?
37. What type of TV do you have? Would you’d like an upgrade?
We have a 50″ Vizio flat screen that we got a BJ’s. I’m not looking for an upgrade.
39. How many dogs do you have?
40. Do most folks trust you?
I hope so.
41. What book are you reading?
I’m reading American Gods, by Neil Gaiman. I gave up on the others for now.
42. What’s your favorite classic TV show?
WKRP In Cincinnati.
43. What’s your favorite sports team?
Don’t have one. I’m not a sports fan.
44. Favorite month and why?
October because Halloween! And because the weather is generally gorgeous and the leaves are beautiful and everything smells awesome.
Synchronicity of the day (at least the one I remembered to record)…while searching for something else, I found a thread on “bad” natal charts on an astrology board, and one of the commenters mentioned that the person who’d posted the question had the fixed star Regulus in a prominent position. Turns out I have the same exact placement. There was a link about Regulus (which I’d read in the past) and it’s a star associated with August 21 through 23.
Do you like blue cheese?
It’s okay. I used to really like bleu cheese dressing, but it’s fallen out of favor for me for Parmesan Peppercorn.
Have you ever smoked cigarettes? If yes, how did you quit?
I did, for about 9 years. I was 18 years old when I started, which was too old and really irresponsible of me, but I was really curious and wanted to know what the big deal was. They were Marlboro reds. I smoked those for a little while and then went through a variety of different brands: Marlboro Lights, Salem Slim Lights (in the custom case), Camel Lights, Parliaments…
I quit using the nicotine patch. It gave me crazy, vivid, tripped-out dreams. One of them was that I was at a friend’s house. We walked across the street and followed a path that led to a retirement home, where the ground was a giant Monopoly board.
Do you own a gun? How are your feelings about gun control/2nd amendment rights?
I don’t own a gun. I think the gun lobby is hugely fraudulent. If it didn’t take 20 first graders, or any of the other victims of mass shootings from 1984 to 2016, they’ll never get it. The 2nd Amendment was written a long time ago. I feel like Americans need a 2nd Amendment origins story, so I recommend this article.
What is your favorite flavor of water or liquor flavors?
In the world of flavored waters, I prefer to drink seltzer. I usually drink Polar and they always have an interesting assortment of limited edition flavors, like these:
And then they did this one:
Unicorn kisses! A friend of mine, whose boyfriend works for Polar, brought me a bottle. It tasted like bubblegum.
Do you get nervous before a doctor visit? Why?
When I worked at a behavioral school, I needed proof of good health for various reasons, so I had to choose a new doctor. I went with the woman my husband sees, because he spoke highly of her and they have a good rapport. So I switched.
Before that, I’d been with an office that I had been with for a few years with whom I experienced lots of incorrectly scheduled appointments, staff turnovers, lost blood work, and general incompetent bungling. And I was disappointed because after all the chaos of the previous office, I found the new place intimidating. The office is gigantic and impersonal. The doctor has a brusque manner. Not only that, but they scheduled my appointment incorrectly in their system. I realize everyone makes mistakes, but these seem to follow me wherever I go. I don’t feel this way when I go to the dentist or the walk-in.
How do you like your hot dogs?
I don’t really eat hot dogs, but when I do, they’re plain.
Although it’s been asked a lot, tell us about a favorite movie that you haven’t shared before.
One of my favorite movies is 1990’s Nightbreed, a Clive Barker fantasy-horror. I’ve written about it here before.
What do you prefer to drink in the morning?
I usually drink tea or Diet Pepsi. Don’t look at me like that.
In a dating situation, have you ever misrepresented yourself to seem cooler or hipper? (Yes we know for most of you it was long ago…)
No, I prefer authenticity.
What’s your favorite piece of jewelry? Why?
A pair of black tourmaline earrings. They’re beautiful, striking, and weird.
Favorite hobby? Tell us about it so we understand it.
One of my favorite hobbies is making zines. I started off with ones about Jellyfish Gangs, Cats With Superpowers, and Worm Clowns. Then I moved onto Mr. McSqueegie’s Ice Cream Truck, which had a little bit of everything. I haven’t made one in a while, though.
Do you have A.D.D., or have you suspected it?
I’ve never been formally diagnosed, and no, online quizzes are not a substitute for a qualified medical professional’s advice. That said, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck…
What’s a thing you dislike or would change about yourself?
I would find the balance between assertiveness and total asshole. I go from “Please stop doing that offensive thing/saying that offensive thing” to “DIE MOTHERFUCKER” in about 8 seconds.
Middle name? Like it or not?
I dropped my birth name (Anne) and made my middle name (Therese) my first name.
Name three random thoughts you might have on this week:
- get a passport picture taken
- spend time doing math practice
- what should I be for Halloween this year?
Name 3 drinks you regularly drink. Tell us a bit about them.
- Earl Grey tea, decaf. I drink it before I go to bed.
- Diet Coke or Coke Zero. I really like the fizz of the first sip after I crack open the can.
- Water, because you need to hydrate with a fluid that actually hydrates you.
Passing the math MTEL. Finding a job. Money. Bills. Conservative voters. Why are we here? What is the point of it all?
My dog, GG Wondermutt, has been having strangely restless nights, in which he paces back and forth for hours. He doesn’t do this at all during the day (probably because he’s been marching to and fro all night like a demented sentinel.)
The only thing that stops him is shutting him out of the bedroom, which is a problem for the cats, who will howl and pound on the door either to be let in or out. yes, I have the most entitled pets in the world.
Crating GG is not an option, especially not at this point. I’m hoping this is just a phase and he’ll stop eventually.
Favorite place to be in the summer? Give us a wee bit more than “the beach”.
I like to get ice cream at a place called Carter’s. And there’s a place called Skip’s near us that we visit a few times during the summer. The food isn’t that amazing, but it’s a tradition to bring GG and get him a hot dog.
How do you usually ring in the new year? If forced (how we’d do that without Judd coming to your house, if you even know who he was) to do something new, what would it be?
As quietly as possible. My party days are long behind me.
What have you done this summer that’s special? Pictures please.
My sister-in-law, her husband, and their daughter came to visit from Colorado. We had cookouts and went to Plimoth Plantation.
We put in a new floor in the art room.
And I finished writing my book.
Have you ever walked into a room with just shoes on?
Yes, flip-flops. That’s one of the strangest questions I’ve ever seen appear on these things.
Take from Sunday Stealing.
What did your last text message say?
Are you someone’s best friend? Tell us about your friendship.
I’m Bubba’s best friend. We’re married. That’s probably one of the best kinds of friendships you can get.
What are you doing tomorrow?
Writing? Cleaning? Maybe go to the boxing gym?
What do you think of when you think of Australia?
Everything is venomous and wants to bite/sting you to death. Also, kangaroos.
Last person you talked to on the phone? What about?
Actually speaking, it was Bubba. Texting, it was Jim.
Any plans today? Do tell.
We’re going to see Animal House tonight. Fathom Events is showing it for 2 nights at various cinemas.
What makes you happy?
Writing and making art. Reading. Listening to music.
What’s your favorite room where you live?
Biggest annoyance in your life right now?
Looking for a job.
Last movie you saw? Review, please.
“Captain Fantastic”, with Viggo Mortensen. It’s about a guy who’s raising his six kids in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest until there’s a death in the family and they need to venture into the real world, which represents pretty much everything they’ve been raised to believe is intolerable about our society. This movie confronts its viewers with some uncomfortable truths about the way we live our conventional, modern lives that are filled with convenience, yet are sorely deficient in critical thinking. It might make you want to sell everything and go live off the grid somewhere.
If you are jealous of anyone, tell us about it.
I’m jealous of things, rather than people. Maybe that’s envy? I probably shouldn’t get into it, I might be here a while. Moving right along…
What is the most serious relationship you’ve had?
The one I’m currently in.
Should anyone be jealous of you?
Hell to the no.
What do you usually do during the work day?
Write and look for gainful employment.
Tell us about someone that you really don’t care for.
No thanks. That’s asking for trouble.
Do you use the phrase “Have a good one” daily?
No! I used variations of it when I worked retail, though.
How old do you wish you’d be turning on your next birthday? Why?
I don’t wish to be any other age other than what I am right now. I’d rather be going forwards than backwards.
Do you still like amusement parks? Tell us about your last trip to one.
The last time was Disney, six years ago. It was fun but not an experience I need to repeat.
How did you get one of your scars?
Most of them came from my cats.
Will you still love me tomorrow?
No. You wanted honesty, didn’t you?
What type of criminal would you be?
Probably the type that takes extra napkins from an ice cream stand. Oh, that’s not a crime? I have no idea, then. I’m not good enough at anything to be a criminal. I have too much of a guilty conscience. Actually I “forgot” to pay for a box of Junior Mints once.
What are you listening to right now?
I’m listening to Gunship, an awesome synthwave band.
If you had to choose a stripper name, what would it be?
To make this easier, and because I’m not feeling particularly imaginative, I got some help. According to this, I’d be Raquelle Glitz. That’s a terrible stripper name! But I can’t think of anything else right now.
If your phone started ringing, who would you hope is calling?
I hope it’s a literary agent offering to represent my book.
Have any stupid human tricks?
I can bend the end knuckle on each of my fingers. And I used to be able to sit cross-legged and the get up and walk around on my knees. Actually I probably still can, but I just haven’t in a while.
What’s your favorite color and why?
Purple, because I think it’s beautiful. Purple is great because it used to be a royal color equating authority and status. Back in the Bronze Age, purple dye was made by the Phoenicians from sea snails. The color ranged from red to purple. Manufacturing the Tyrian purple dye was a difficult process and thus massively expensive. Thanks to modern techniques and synthetic dyes, anyone can wear purple.
Do you ever wish you were someone else?
Don’t we all? I think it’s enough of a pain in the ass being me.
What were you like when you were a kid?
I was very strange and imaginative. You can read about my fun with balsa wood gliders, how we kept pet elves, and other miscellaneous childhood adventures here. C’mon, that last link has stories about squirrel booby traps.
What would your dream house be like?
I like where I live now, but I wish I was in a warmer region of the country.

I’m a mix of both of them

Do you get jealous easily?
Unfortunately yes. This is a trait I have not been able to overcome.
Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
Ambivert more accurately describes me.
Do you believe in life on other planets, ghosts, or mythical creatures?
I’ve written on here before of my paranormal beliefs and adventures. If you’re curious, you can check out the Paranormal category on the left.
What talent do you wish you’d been born with?

Have you ever been diagnosed with depression?
Have you ever contemplated suicide?
How long was your longest relationship?
Is the glass half empty or half full?
It’s both. It depends on how I’m feeling.
Are you a bad person?
There are people who are a lot worse.
Are you a lover or a fighter?
Both. Different times, different circumstances.
What did you do on your last birthday?
I went out to eat
What is your favorite quote and why?
It’s as accurate as anything to describe my attitude towards life.
If you had to go back in time and change one thing, what would it be?
I would have chosen a career earlier and stuck with it and I would have asked for help.
If you only had 24 hours to live, what would you do?
I wouldn’t do anything. With only 24 hours it’s too late anyway.
What is the strangest dream you’ve ever had?
They’ve all been strange, but this one that I recorded back on 12/18/2001 sticks out:
I was in a building like the MSPCA (animal shelter near me) in a barn. It had stalls for horses but there were all kinds of blackbirds, like crows and grackles, perched on a fence inside. I asked one of the shelter workers if I could take one out and he said yes, so I did, but suddenly he grew to 9 feet tall. The bird strode out of the stall. It was black and had purple wings. He had a name but I forget what it is now.
He circled around us like a velociraptor and kept asked if we were afraid of him. of course I lied and said no. I remember being completely terrified that he was going to disembowel us with his clawed feet. The shelter worker grabbed me and pulled me under a table and yelled at me for letting the bird out. I could see the bird’s feet from under the table. It was like the kitchen scene in Jurassic Park. Then the dream ended.

There are merits to both but I like where I am right now.
What is your happiest childhood memory?

Just one thing? I would eliminate ignorance.
